Pasquetta, Liberazione e "gemme"

Yesterday, besides celebrating Pasquetta (Little Easter, also called Angel's Monday when the Angel appeared to the women to tell them that Jesus was risen) which is a national holiday, Italy also celebrated the day of Liberation, when the Second World War ended. Being the 150th year of the Unity of Italy, a lot of celebrations took place all over the country. It is so nice to see the italian flag displayed on businesses, homes, on the bicicles and just about everywhere, for the italians this is unusual, but this year we went back to patriotism, a much needed feeling that had been forgotten for a long time. We were in Mantova where my dear mom lives and where I was born.

We have a two hours drive to get to my mom's house so we left in the morning after a long Easter day with church and dinner guests, we were a little tired and we thught that maybe it would have been better to stay home and rest. We did not know what day was about to unfold, a true gift, one that you take with you for a long time.

We do not know the surrounding area, anyway we headed for the country, the vast Po Valley, flat and beautiful. My mother reminisced her childhood spent in the country as a war refugee and named the small towns one by one. We arrived at noon in the town of Quistello and stopped by a country inn, quite rustic. A handwritten sign at the door advertised : "Grilled meat in the courtyard for lunch". The aroma was tantalizing.....
We sat in the large courtyard where old tables and chairs were set for the feast, many people were already eating... A short wait and we get served large plates of grilled meat, mostly pork since it is the main meat eaten in my area, it was done to perfection....a nice glass of Lambrusco, a hearty, bubbly red wine produced in the area...While we eat, I noticed, seated at a table in front of us an elderly man consuming his meal all by himself. After he finished he sat there, thinking and looking at the peolple chatting while having their meal. I really felt for him, I know how my mom feels many times and I wish I lived closer to relief some of her lonliness.

As he rises to leave the place and directs himself toward the exit, I touch his arm and and wish him happy Easter, I take a chair and ask him to sit with us introducing myself and my family. He sits immediately grateful to be invited to chat with us. So we get to know a little mister M., 87 years of age, a widower living by himself, 7 months in a concentration camp during the war, a life lived to the fullest. We chat away a good hour. We talk about life, children, present times, old times, the small joys of everyday life. He keeps himself busy, reads a lot, spends time at the library every day, walks in the country....I treasure his words, wisdom from life experience. We talk also about loneliness, he tells me that he feels very lonely in the summer, so when that happens he takes a chair and sits in the warm evenings to look at the stars....his loneliness is then eased, looking up helps him go through another night, Up there there is Who thinks of us and for us.
He rises from the chair and thanks us for having given him one of the small joys of life, some company in his loneliness. This was the gem that was given to me yesterday, to be remembered, to be treasured, a gem that will last in my heart.

In the courtyard live music begins, a singer well over 60, white pony tail, worned out jeans and an Hawaian shirt, a witness of 1968, a time of rebellion against the institutions, sings songs written by Vecchioni and we enjoy his voice and this day full of "gems". On the way home we witness a parade of american Second World War vehicles, we salute them tankful to be living in a free country.

Seek, count and treasure the "gems" that are given to you every day.

Always stitching,
~ Roberta ~

It is so nice to see your mother again, Roberta. Please tell her that I said hi! I remember our lunch together and sharing our lives while we drove and got lost on the way to the quilt store.

You did a wonderful thing for the man in the restaurant.
