valbruna atto secondo: assemblea annuale

Spero che vi sia rimasto un po' di the freddo e che la poltrona sia ancora disponibile perche' oggi ne vedrete delle belle, anzi dei "belli"! I quilts e le loro autrici sono i protagonisti in questo show all'aperto che tutti gli anni e' conosciuto con il nome "arido" di "Assemblea annuale"! E' la festa di tutti coloro che sono stati vicini a Germana e la "sua" festa. Tutti i desideri che aveva per i suoi quilts e per quelli delle sue allieve e amiche, la sua famiglia li sta esaudendo uno ad uno....e Germana ne aveva tanti!

I hope you still have some ice tea left and that the comfortable seat is still available because you are going to see many "beauties''.  The quilts and their makers are the main characters of a show that goes under the name of "Annual Meeting" of the Valbruna Patchwork Club. It is the celebration of all the quilts, their makers and Germana. She had many wishes for her quilts and the quilts of her students and friends and her family is set out to make them come true....and Germana had a lot!

La chiesa di Valbruna

Oggi per la prima volta sono entrata nella chiesina di Valbruna. La giornata era stupenda, il sole faceva luccicare la neve candida, le montagne erano piu' maestose che mai, faceva freddissimo. Eravamo i primi, arrivati da distante e quindi partiti per tempo, anche perche' sapevamo che la chiesa avrebbe contenuto pochissime delle persone venute ad onorare Germana e ad essere vicini alla sua meravigliosa famiglia. Quieti con la nostra tristezza ci siamo seduti ed abbiamo atteso gli altri. Sui banchi, ad ogni singolo posto era stato appoggiato un foglio piegato a meta' che recava il titolo: "Dedicato a Germana". Leggerlo ha fatto scaturire ancora lacrime di distacco da lei, la cui vita ci ha toccato in modo tenero, ma forte per la persona che era. Fa bene piangere, e anche chi era accanto a me, un omone grande e grosso dal nome celestiale, ha lasciato scendere la sua commozione.

Sul foglio, le parole di Vittorio e dei quattro figli. Ognuno con il suo cuore e a suo modo ha scritto per se' stesso e per tutti noi delle parole che ricordano Germana.

" Per molti anni abbiamo percorso i sentieri, anche tortuosi, dei monti e della vita.

Sei arrivata per prima in vetta.

Riposati e aspettami.

E quando ti raggiungero' staremo di nuovo insieme, per sempre..." Vittorio

Delle parole scritte dai figli, ho scelto quelle di Maria, la figlia minore perche' quiltista anche lei come Germana e perche' parlano al cuore di noi tutte che facciamo patchwork.

" Un istante...e il ghiaccio ha ricoperto e congelato tutto.

Ogni cosa si e' fermata. Il paesaggio e' immobile. Sento freddo, tanto freddo.

Ma so che il calore presto ritornera',

il calore di una coperta che protegge, avvolge, coccola, rincuora.

Sarai tu mamma la mia coperta.

E insieme a te continuero' a cucire la mia vita, con le forme e i meravigliosi colori che tu hai fin qui scelto per me.

Mi guardo allo specchio e rivedo i tuoi tratti. Spero di assomigliarti sempre di piu', spero di diventare bella come te...soprattutto nel cuore..." Maria

Non serve dire altro, ora bisogna rimboccarsi le maniche, prendere in mano l' ago, far suonare la macchina per cucire e aiutare Maria a terminare i quilts che Germana aveva in cantiere e...sono tanti!

...così, cucendo i suoi bellissimi quilts, oppure in cucina ai fornelli, al tavolo chiacchierando di tutto, patch, vita, montagna, stoffe, ricette, oppure passeggiando nel bosco pieno dei suoi colori, il marrone ed il verde, oppure in mezzo alle sue donne che la amano tanto, oppure a casa mia per una visita, oppure con Vittorio suo compagno amatissimo, oppure raccontando barzellette, oppure........la sua vita occupava la nostra molto di più che la nostra occupasse la sua. In due parole, ERA SPECIALE. Germana.

....sewing her beautiful quilts, with her husband Vittorio, cooking delicious meals, talking with me about life, quilting, her beloved mountains, her woods full of her favorite colors, luscious browns and forest greens, amidst her students who loved her dearly, in my home for a visit, telling hilarious jokes.....she was special, Germana.

Valbruna

Come, i want you to meet some of my dearest friends. Their home is always open because their hearts are always open, their names are Vittorio and Germana and they live in Valbruna , a small town in the Julian Alps, where mountains are purple, the thick woods are full of gnomes and fairy tales about such creatures abound.

Vieni, voglio presentarti alcuni dei miei piu' cari amici. La loro casa e' sempre aperta perche' il loro cuore e' sempre aperto, si chiamano Vittorio e Germana e vivono a Valbruna nelle Alpi Giulie, dove le alte montagne sono viola, i folti boschi pieni di gnomi e dove le favole su tali creature abbondano.

Vittorio and Germana reached recently their seventies and their life story it is so interesting and full that they could write a thick book on it, but i want to start when i met Germana for the first time. She was one of my student in a beginner's class. She timidly asked me during the first lesson if, by the end of the class she would have been able to make a quilt for her first granchild. She set herself to work hard at learning the skills with great success, she had never sewn on a sewing machine before the class!

Vittorio e Germana hanno appena passato la soglia dei settanta e la storia della loro vita e' cosi piena ed interessante che potrebbero scrivere un lunghissimo libro, ma voglio iniziare da quando ho incontrato Germana per la prima volta. Era una delle iscritte ad un mio corso

principianti e durante la prima lezione mi chiese se sarebbe stata in grado di cucire un quilt per il suo primo nipotino. Si applico' seriamente ed impararo' l'arte con successo, e pensare che non sapeva cucire a macchina prima del corso!

Fifteen ( has it been so long Germana?) years later she is one of the best and most prolific quilters that i know of, she started and is nurturing not one but two different groups of ladies that faithfully follow her teaching with great results. She also gave life to Valbruna Patchwork Club ( her guild) that holds its annual meeting in the beautiful yard of her home in july. I am one of the members and i gladly drive two hours to fellowship with Germana and Vittorio, all the quilters and their families who are treasured friends. Yes, all the families are welcomed and encouraged to actively participate at the event.

Last year Gemana was ill and the event did not take place. We all missed it and all our prayers were for her.This july she was back like new and with her groups she put on a grand show!

Quindici anni ( e' passato cosi' tanto tempo Germana?) sono trascorsi e devo dire che Germana

e' una delle piu' brave e prolifiche quiltiste che io conosca, ha iniziato e sta amorevolmente coltivando non uno ma due gruppi di quiltiste che la seguono fedelmente con ottimi risultati. Germana ha anche fondato il Valbruna Patchwork Club che tiene la sua assemblea annuale nel bel giardino di casa sua in luglio. Io sono una delle socie e faccio con molto piacere le due ore di strada per partecipare all' evento e stare con Germana e Vittorio e i molti amici che ho li'. Le famiglie delle socie sono benvenute e tutti si danno un gran da fare per rendere questo giorno memorabile.

L'anno scorso Germana e' stata malata e l'evento non ha avuto luogo. A tutti e' mancato e le nostre preghiere erano tutte per lei. Quest'anno e' tornata come nuova e ha fatto una mostra

meravigliosa!

Good food, wine, delicious cakes are set out in abundance and the yard is carpeted with gorgeous quilts. The best works belong to Germana who has become also a wonderful teacher. She is finishing her "Dear Jane" and she used all her dutch fabric. She told me that even when she was so ill, she never stopped working on a quilt even if slowly. She is known to have several projects in progress and when she puts the last stitch in she has already given it away as a gift.

Cibi prelibati, vini sopraffini e torte deliziose vengono serviti in abbondanza e il prato della sua casa e' coperto da molti quilts. I lavori piu' belli sono di Germana che e' anche diventata una bravissima insegnante. Sta terminando il suo " Dear Jane" nel quale ha usato la sua collezione di tessuti olandesi. Mi ha detto che anche quando non stava bene, non ha mai smesso di mettere qualche punto su un quilt anche se andava avanti a rilento.

Her Husband Vittorio does his part by woodworking beautiful things that complement Germana's quilts, he made all the signs you see in the pictures and his specialty are birdhouses of all kinds.

Vittorio fa la sua parte costruendo casette per gli uccelli di tutti i generi, per un occupante, condomini, chiesette, a schiera e i cartelli di legno riportanti poesie e detti di vario genere, mica male per un ex dirigente di azienda!!!

Germana and her groups participated in the Project for the children in Abruzzo and made three quilts, she also asked me to talk about the project and tell some of the stories behind it, people listen attentively and two other quilts were promised! I brought some quilts with me so everyone could see how quilters work in other parts of Italy and the world.
Germana e i suoi gruppi hanno partecipato al progetto Mille Colori con tre quilts e mi ha chiesto di comunicare i progressi e raccontare alcune delle belle storie relative ad alcuni quilts ricevuti.
