the happyness... ~ la felicita'...

...I see in the student's eyes, makes up for all the tiredness I feel after completing a course, especially a beginners level! The following pictures show the work that they've done at home for my beginners course, short but very intense. Girls, you did it...now on to the quilting!
Ce l'avete fatta ragazze...ora a quiltare!

P. , very proud of her work, she added the sashing to the blocks and also the outer border, she was the one who was always ahead! P. had always a good sense of humor, she worked hard all her life and now she is taking time out for herself, she is quick and determined . She always came to class with more than the homework assigned done, bringing blocks that I had not taught yet! Keep on going P.!!!

S., the quiet one of the group, sewed blocks that had an antique look. I always start my course by telling the history of quilting in the USA. The women are so fascinated by the fact that they are going to be learning a craft that has been passed on and they love to hear the story of american women that, through their frugality, necessity and also passion for cloth, made beautiful quilts. Keep up the good work S.!

L. chose a beautiful and unusual color scheme and she did a great job! Her main print was not easy, but she enhanced it well with the other fabrics. Good choice L.! When I teach color theory applied to basic quilting, I take with me a box containing few sets of fabric to explain how color works in a sampler. It seems to be the part of the course that everyone eagerly awaits due to the fact that patchwork and quilting do not belong to our culture, it is a fairly new craft, women do not know the term "quilt'', for them it is a patchwork blanket, so all that needs to be taught and defined....they do catch up quickly though...look at the results!

Precision at a beginner's class is not something to be strongly enforced, but as we progress into the class, the students truly begin to be more demanding on themselves and strive for it. M. is a very precise person and she was always full of questions. Her choice of fabrics was as such that she wanted to fussy cut a particular fabric so she could place certain designs in chosen places in the blocks. It never happened that someone wanted to fussy cut fabric in a beginners class , but there is always a first...M.! Being very precise, she was able to do it with great success! The kitties (the fussy cut pieces) quilt will grace her oldest daughter's bed.

P. and I already knew each other, she attended a few of my classes in the past and I was not expecting to see her in a beginners class! At my question: " What are you doing here?!?!" she answered that she felt she was lacking some of the foundations to be able to work independently and with confidence. In the mean time she retired, and that gives her the time to dedicate herself to quilting without feeling rushed and anxious about other things....lucky you P.!!!!!!!! Her work was really beautiful, having already practiced on other pieces and she was sooo relaxed! Keep on going P., see you soon in another class!

M. made this beauty, before taking the beginners class, it was perfectly pieced and pressed, truly a work of art! I knew that she was going to shine and she did!

Here she is with her top completed with the sashing, the choice of the right fabric was not easy, but she did it! It is beautifully and precisely pieced, she told us it will make her mother happy since she will be the recipient of her work. How generous of her, usually the first sampler is like first love, to be kept and cherished, the students never give it away....

D. is an energetic lady , wife to a husband and mum to three boys all playing rugby , she spends a lot of her time taking them to practice and cooking trying to appiece their incredible appetite!
She wanted to attend a patch class for sometimes....so between practice, games and pots and pans, she sewed her beautiful top....now she says she has to sew other four of them since her men
all want one....even rugby players have a soul!!! You scored high D.!!!!!
( senza offesa D.! E' detto in modo molto positivo!!!) Hai certamente guadagnato punti D.!!!!

I do not have a picture of R., she had a difficult week so she did not completed her work. She came to class with a gift for all of us: a small piece of paper on which she had scribbled in pencil words that made all of us cry. She told us that the few simple phrases described what she felt she learned from the class besides quilting. Listen carefully as we all did yesterday:

"To be creative brings joy.
Friendship is a blessing.
In a clay pot is hidden a treasure."

These few simple words summarized our time together this past month. We not only learned a craft that will bring us and our loved ones joy, we experienced joy in sharing our lives with one another, women who were perfect strangers before. Again we felt that true friendship in these times is hard to find, it is a rare blessing to be treasured. And at last with the words of the Apostle Paul she reminded us that we are like clay pots, simple and fragile, but containing the treasure of creativity to be shared with others. We laughed, we cried, we worked, we learned and we enjoyed each other. All this is a true and precious blessing!
Ascoltate attentamente come abbiamo fatto noi ieri:

Abbiamo condiviso, pianto, riso, imparato, lavorato e gustato ogni momento trascorso insieme. Tutto questo e' una vera benedizione!

I want to thank Tanja owner of Home Sweet Home with her sister Sonja ( now at home happy to care for little Thomas) a marvelous quiltshop in the Venice province, she made coffee for us when we badly needed it and she helped us in the task, for us quilters vital, of fabric choice....I learned a lot through this class although I was the one teaching it. A big thank you to all!

Buon week end....sew a little if you can
