In my last post you met many beautiful women and their work. I am amazed at what they can produce, their quilts are vibrant and colorful, just like their beautiful island. But you all have to know that they have very little they can work with, in the island there are three or four shops and they are not quilt shops, they sell a few ribbons, bottons, apparel and decorator fabric and a little bit of everything. Their fabric selection is maybe 100 fabrics and some of them....well I better not say. Quilting tools are very scarse and many of them are not the best....but they are so eager to learn quilting and they have such a good teacher, my friend Blanche, that a small miracle happens every time that their blocks are sewn. Their work takes shape and it is usually beautiful!!!
Nel mio ultimo post vi ho presentato delle bellissime quiltiste con i loro lavori. Sono molto meravigliata di quello che riescono a fare, i loro quilts sono coloratissimi e vivaci, proprio come la loro bellissima isola. Dovete sapere pero' che hanno a disposizione pochissimi tessuti con cui lavorare, nell'isola ci sono tre o quattro negozietti che vendono nastri, bottoni, tessuti da arredamento e avranno al massimo un centinaio di tessuti nel migliore dei casi e, credetemi, non sono dei migliori. Strumenti per il patch sono quasi inesistenti e non della migliore qualita' e quando ne trovano lo comprano al volo! Sono pero' cosi desiderose di fare ed imparare e hanno un' insegnante cosi dedicata, la mia cara Blanche, che ogni volta che cuciono i loro blocchi, avviene un piccolo miracolo. Il loro lavoro prende forma ed e' sempre bellissimo!!!
When I make a quilt I always need that shade of blue I do not have......so I go out to buy it even if in my stash I have 30 or more different blues in all the shades you can imagine....and sometimes the small miracle does not happen!!!!
It is so true in this case that LESS is BETTER!!!
When iI go home next time I will make a quilt I will do with what I have and....I am sure the small miracle will happen!!! I will then think fondly of the beautiful quilters in this warm and hospitable island.
Quando decido di fare un quilt, ho sempre bisogno di quella sfumatura di blu che non ho nelle mie stoffe....cosi vado a comprarla anche se le stoffe blu nel mio armadio sono una trentina e delle piu diverse sfumature....e a volte quel piccolo miracolo non succede!!!
E' cosi vero in questo caso che MENO e' MEGLIO!!!
Quando torno a casa, mi sono riproposta di fare proprio come loro, con quello che ho e sono certa che il piccolo miracolo avverra'. Allora pensero' con nostalgia alle belle quiltiste che vivono in questa calda e accogliente isola.

That's amazing Roberta, that they do not have access to all the things that make our quilter's hearts beat faster, and yet create masterpieces. I'm very humbled by their beautiful work.
E' proprio vero! inoltre penso che il vero spirito del patchwork dovrebbe essere proprio quello di riuscire a dare un'anima anche a stoffe di poco conto. Ciao roberta, ti aspettiamo in Italy. Rita di udine
