It is happening!!! Si inizia!!!

Si inizia!!! Attraverso il tam tam di internet, ho gia' ricevuto adesioni a "Mille Colori per i bimbi d'Emilia"! Alcune avevano gia' partecipato al progetto per l'Abruzzo altre sono nuove. Se mi leggi per la prima volta e vuoi saperne di piu', qui trovi il tutto, mettiti una mano sul cuore e una alle stoffe, rotella e macchina per cucire, la tua fantasia ti aiutera'...Ora corro da Merceria e Dintorni dove aquistero' un po' di coloratissimi tessuti e raccontero' alle quiltiste presenti del secondo progetto....a proposito, fanno una svendita inusitata!

Sono da poco tornata da Padova ( dove molte hanno dato l"adesione) e ho trovato 9 mail di adesione a Mille colori per l'Emilia!!!! Hurra' a tutte voi, sapete chi siete, tante nuove, molte che avevano gia' partecipato!
Mi sono commossa come il solito e mi sa che gli occhi saranno ben lubrificati nei prossimi giorni!

I just came back from quilt shop in Padua (many are going to participate) and I found 9 e- mails of quilters: new ones and old ones who already participated in the project in 2009!!! I take my hat off to you ladies! Naturally I wept for joy as in 2009.....

Children's drawings ~ Disegni di bimbi

Ogni pacco dato ai bimbi, conteneva una lettera che spiegava ai genitori il progetto "Mille Colori". Alla fine dello scritto, ho richiesto a chi desiderava farlo, di far disegnare al bimbo se stesso con il suo quilt o il quilt ricevuto. Alcuni giorni fa ho ricevuto una lettera dalla mamma di E. che mi rassicurava che quando la sua bimba sarebbe stata piu' grandina, le avrebbe raccontato della Signora generosa che aveva pensato a lei tanto da cucirle un quiltino per tenerle compagnia augurandole un futuro migliore. La lettera era corredata da un disegno fatto da E. del suo quilt. Mi auguro che questo sia il primo di tanti ad arrivare. Ho cercato nelle foto quale potesse essere, a me sembra questo... e a voi?

Every package we gave to the children, contained a letter explaining the project ''A Thousand Colours ". At the end of the letter I requested a drawing made by the child picturing Him or Her with their quilt or the quilt itself. A few days ago I received a letter by E.'s mother assuring me that when her daughter was old enough to understand she will tell her about a nice and generous lady who sewed her colorful quilt wishing her a better future. At the end of the letter there was a drawing made by E. picturing her quilt. I hope this is the first of many to come. I looked through the pictures we took of the quilts to identify which one could be.... I think this is it......don't you?

Errata corrige!!!!!!!

Il quilt non e' questo! Era simile, ma non e' questo.....mi ha telefonato una cara amica che ha visitato il blog e gentilmente ha corretto....quindi correggero' anch'io. Alcune signore hanno deciso di mettere il loro indirizzo nell'etichetta dietro al quilt e la quiltista che ha cucito il quilt lo ha fatto. La mamma della bimba che lo ha ricevuto ha scritto sia a me sia a lei, recandoci molta gioia. Eccovi il quilt.......

Errata!!!!!!!!!!

This is not the quilt! It is similar but it is not the one.......i got a call from a friend who visited my blog and kindly told me about it. Some quilters decided to write their address on the label of their quilt and the quilter that made this quilt was one of them. The mother of the child who received the quilt, wrote to her and to me thank us. Here is the quilt of E.'s drawing......

Onna, the town that is no more......Onna il paese che non c'e' piu'....

....the town that experienced distruction, was literally swept away the 6th of april. 330 inhabitants, 22 victims. These are some of the newspaper headlines that depicted this tiny town and when we decided to contact the schools, my first thought went to Onna. The new village has been built around a new church and a new school, the Giulia Carnevale Maternal School ( here in Italy "Maternal school" is the name for nursery and kindergarten, children ages 3 to 5 ). Giulia Carnevale is the name of one of the victims of the quake in Onna, a young gal who was about to graduate from university in architecture. I was told by one of the teachers that her mother found her thesis in her lap top after her death and it was a blueprint for the construction of a new beautiful Maternal School. I strongly felt that the children of this school should be among the recipients of ''A Thousand colours". So the 17th we set out to bring our quilts to them. We had snow during the night and everything was Christmassy white.

...il paese che ha sperimentato la distruzione, e' stato letteralmente spazzato via il 6 di aprile. 330 abitanti, 22 vittime. Questi sono alcuni dei titoli dei quotidiani che hanno descritto questo piccolo paese e quando ci siamo trovati a decidere quali scuole contattare per la consegna dei quilts, il mio primo pensiero e' stato per Onna. Il nuovissimo villaggio di case colorate e' stato costruito intorno alla chiesa e alla Scuola Materna Giulia Carnevale. Giulia e' stata una delle giovani vittime e stava per laurearsi in architettura. Dopo la sua morte, la madre ha trovato la sua tesi di laurea nel suo portatile: il progetto per una bella scuola materna. E' in questa scuola che il mattino del 17 siamo stati accolti con entusiasmo dal personale e dai bambini. Il cielo della notte ci aveva regalato la neve che aveva reso tutto candido.

I could not hold back tears of joy, for the past months I had been thinking about Onna and now finally we were there with the quilts. The personnel and the children were especting us and they all clapped their hands when we entered the auditorium, the sang a Christmas song and we were lead to a room were we worked a few hours to package the 104 quilts that were to be given to the kids in the afternoon Christmas program.

All the bags were filled with a quilt, a children's book, an ispirational calendar for the parents and a letter that explained the Project, bearing my blog address and a request for drawings from the children depicting them and or their quilt. The bag then got stapled and a festive bow placed on it. This was done for every quilt.....believe me, when you pack 10 is one thing, but when you pack 100.......you need help!!!

Elena and Ilaria, two of the mothers helped us and truly without them we would'nt have made it!!!

Non ho pottuto trattenere le lacrime di gioia, tutti questi mesi di attesa, di trepidazione, finalmente il momento era arrivato. Il personale e i bambini ci aspettavano e appena siamo entrati hanno tutti battuto le mani, ci hanno cantato un canto natalizio e siamo stati condotti nello spazio dove abbiamo imbustato i 104 quilts. Abbiamo lavorato alcune ore, ogni busta e' stata riempita con il quilt, un libro per bambini, un calendario per i genitori ed una lettera che spiegava il progetto e recante il mio blog per riferimento futuro e la richiesta di disegni da parte dei bimbi in cui ritraggono se stessi con il loro quilt. La busta poi veniva chiusa e decorata con un fiocco

natalizio. Questo per ogni quilt....credetemi finche' sono 10 e' un conto, quando sono 104....e' un'altra storia e hai bisogno di aiuto!!!

Elena ed Ilaria, due mamme ci hanno aiutato molto e possiamo dire che senza il loro aiuto non ce l'avremmo mai fatta!

In the afternoon during the Christmas program I explained with the help of Vera the project to the children and then to their parents and with the help of Santa Claus ( a firemen from Rome on duty in Abruzzo ) each child was called by name and the quilts delivered. I think for the first time Santa got to be a helper, we wanted the children to know that the quilts were made and donated by ladies who loved them. I got soooo many kisses!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And all of them so sweet including the kiss of a little girl who lost her mom in the tragedy. What a blessing it is to be with children!

Nel pomeriggio durante il programma natalizio, ho spiegato ai bimbi con l'aiuto di Vera il progetto Mille colori e poi ai genitori e con la collaborazione di Babbo Natale (un vigile del Fuoco di Roma in missione in Abruzzo ) ho distribuito i quilts ai bimbi. Credo che sia stata la prima volta che Babbo Natale abbia fatto l'aiutante perche' abbiamo voluto che i bimbi sapessero che i quilts erano stati cuciti con amore e donati da signore che hanno pensato a loro. Tantissimi baci anche questa volta, non me ne sono persa uno, erano tutti cosi dolci, incluso quello di una bimba rimasta senza mamma. Che benedizione si riceve stando con i piccoli!

I genitori erano commossi al pensiero che cosi tante signore che fanno patch in Italia ed nel resto del mondo hanno pensato ai loro piccoli tanto da cucire con amore un quilt cosi bello e colorato, un dono inaspettato. Molti ci hanno stretto la mano, abbracciato e si sono raccomandati di ringraziarvi per aver pensato a loro in modo cosi tangibile. Ci siamo sentiti benedetti e vi portiamo il loro piu' sentito GRAZIE!

The parents were so touched that so many quilters in Italy and around the world thought of their children and sewed a colorful quilt of love for them, an unexpected gift so appreciated. Many shook our hands, many hugged us and all of them told us to pass on their deepest thanks to you all, we felt so blessed to be able to do it! THANK YOU!!!

L'Albero dai Mille Colori - The Tree of a Thousand Colours

Dato che non ho potuto continuare a postare in Abruzzo, postero' all' incontrario....il post di oggi e' per il 16 dicembre.

I could not continue to post in Abruzzo so i will post my trip diary in the next few days. Today's post is for the 16th of december.

Oggi la prima consegna nella Scuola Materna di Paganica, alle pendici del Gran Sasso.

Lascero' parlare le foto, le emozioni sono tante e forti. Quasi ogni famiglia rappresentata ha perso dei cari e la propria casa e se non l'ha persa e' danneggiata.

Today the first distribution in the Paganica School, at the feet of the Gran Sasso mountain.

I will let the photos speak for themselves, it was very emotional. Almost every family represented lost a relative and or their home.

Siamo arrivati in mattinata e abbiamo imbustato i quilts.

We arrived in the morning and we packaged all the quilts.

Ecco la sorpresa: l' aiutante "peloso", il mio cane Vera! Con il suo aiuto ho spiegato ai bimbi che un quilt e' una coperta speciale e che delle signore da tutto il mondo le hanno cucite per loro.

The furry helper: my dog Vera! With its help I explained the children that a quilt is a very special blanket and that many ladies around the world sewed them thinking of them.

I bimbi hanno gradito l' intervento di Vera e anche i genitori assistono divertiti!

The children loved Vera and so did the parents!

La consegna dei quilts ai bambini e' stata la mia parte preferita del programma, hanno preso il loro pacco con manine trepidanti ed alcuni erano cosi' piccoli che potevano entrare nella grossa busta!

My favorite part of the program was when I gave each child their quilt, they eagerly took their bag and some of them were so little they could easily fit into it!

Sono stata letteralmente coperta di baci e li ho graditi moltissimo!

I was the recepient of a lot of kisses and needless to say I accepted them gladly!

I genitori hanno compreso lo spirito di Mille Colori e tutti ci hanno ringraziato di cuore, molti con lacrime agli occhi. Noi abbiamo ringraziato per tutte voi che avete donato amore tramite il

vostro quilt e vi portiamo i saluti piu' cari di tutti anche se non vi conoscono.

The parents understood well the spirit behind " A thousand Colours " and they were all so grateful, many of them thanked us with tears in their eyes and told us to pass along to all of you their deepest thanks even if they never met you.

Noi possiamo solo dire per l'ennesima volta che " Vi e' piu' gioia nel dare che nel ricevere "

(Gesu') e oggi lo abbiamo vissuto veramente.

We can only say again that " It is more blessed to give than to receive" (Jesus) and today we truly and fully experienced it.

Ah, quasi dimenticavo....il nome della scuola materna e'......L'Albero dai Mille Colori!

Oh, I was about to forget....the name of the school is.......The Tree of the Thousand Colours!

We are here and we are fine! Siamo arrivati e stiamo bene!

After a very long trip, heavy rain, fog and snow we finally are in Abruzzo!!! I am so excited I can hardly believe it. Last night when we arrived we could see some of the damage of the quake, it is very different to see it first hand than on tv. We are staying on the grounds of a hotel in the country and there are so many RVs, we later learned they are the " homes '' of many of the folks who lost everything. We met Elena who is the PTA person for one of the schools we will be visiting with the quilts, she called us a few times in Treviso and we felt welcomed even before getting here. To me that makes a big difference.

Il viaggio e' stato lungo, abbiamo visto tutte le condizioni atmosferiche: pioggia, nebbia, vento e neve, ma siamo finalmente in Abruzzo!!! Sono eccitata come una bambina e quasi non riesco a credere che Mille Colori sia arrivato a destinazione. Per la strada verso l'agriturismo dove abbiamo una piazzola per il camper, abbiamo potuto vedere un po' dei danni che ha fatto il sisma....e' molto diverso vederli dal vivo ( era anche buio ) che in televisione. Ci sono molti camper e roulotte intorno all' agriturismo, abbiamo saputo che sono le "case " di tanti aquilani che hanno perso tutto o la cui casa aspetta di essere restaurata.

Elena e' venuta a trovarci oggi, e' la rappresentante di classe della scuola materna di Onna, ci ha portato una bellissima stella di Natale e abbiamo chiacchierato un po' insieme. La settimana scorsa ci aveva chiamato per presentarsi e ci ha seguito con le sue telefonate e sms varie volte durante il viaggio. Essere attesi e' una cosa bella e confortante e per me questo suo gesto e' stato importante.

Today we worked hard preparing books that will be added to the package with the quilt and preparing our talks that will be part of the Christmas program in every school, I brought with me a "furry" helper who will aid me in explaining A thousand colours to the children....it's a surprise.....

Tomorrow morning we will travel to Paganica and we will prepare all the packages, decorate them with a colorful bow.....in the afternoon the Christmas program with carols, a play, our presentation and the distribution of the quilts....many little hands will finally touch their quilt!!! We will be there to represent all of you and bring your love.

Thanks to all who called, e-mailed, text messaged....we feel so blessed.

Oggi abbiamo lavorato tanto per preparare dei libri che andranno nel pacco con il vostro quilt e ci stiamo preparando perche' faremo un intervento durante il programma natalizio in ogni scuola, ho portato con me un aiutante "peloso" con il quale spieghero' il progetto ai bambini....e' una sorpresa....

Domani mattina andremo a Paganica e li' imbusteremo i quilts designati ai bimbi in buste con un bel fiocco....nel pomeriggio ci sara' il programma con canti e recita, la nostra presentazione e la consegna ai bimbi.....finalmente i quilts saranno nelle manine dei loro proprietari!!! Saremo li' con tutte voi e faremo gli auguri per tutte.

Grazie a tutti coloro che ci hanno chiamato, scritto, mandato sms....ci sentiamo cosi' benedetti.

siamo presi con le bombe!!!

Certo che era tanto tempo che non correvo cosi'....non sto ad annoiarvi con i particolari, ma le ultime settimane sono state molto piene. In questo periodo dell'anno Vincent ed io siamo impegnati con molte cose sia personalmente sia con la nostra chiesa. E' il momento dell'anno che prepariamo e distribuiamo il nostro calendario evangelico a moltissime persone ed amici, inclusa l'intera isola di Burano, al largo di Venezia. Cosi' invece di partire domani, partiamo lunedi' mattina....la prima distribuzione di coperte avverra' mercoledi' quindi siamo a posto ed entrambi abbiamo tirato un sospiro di sollievo! Non abbiamo piu' l'eta' per correre all'impazzata, domani carichiamo il camper e lunedi' mattina si parte. Se potro' postare lo faro', se non vedete niente, mi sentirete al ritorno....con una valanga di cose da raccontare. Pensateci!

Ah....il quiltino lo ha cucito Mamma Paola di Modena ed e' il piu' divertente che ho ricevuto per Mille Colori.....quei topini sono certo determinati a far fuori il povero gattone sornione, guardate il loro ghigno perfidamente divertito!!!

" We are taken with bombs " is an italian every day fun expression used to tell others you are extremely busy and so in state of " life emergency "! It is the expression I' ve been using these last few days. December is a very busy month for us as we prepare and give away personally and as a church to lots of people our scripture calendar. So we were so busy that we will leave for Abruzzo on Monday instead of tomorrow morning. The donation of the quilts will begin on Wednesday, so we are ok with time.....we were relieved to have one extra day to prepare things properly and without running so much......we can't do it anymore.

Tomorrow we finish packing and you will hear from me if I will be able to post, if not I will post when we will be back...think and pray for us!

And oh....I almost forgot.....Grandma Paula sewed the quilt in the picture for A Thousand Colors , isn' t it a fun quilt? Those naughty mice are really determined to blow up the poor kitty....take a close look at their faces!

Not all angels have wings...non tutti gli angeli hanno le ali...

When we learned that it was very difficult to find a place to stay near Aquila , we were adviced by many friends to rent an RV.

The rebuilding is taking place in Abruzzo and some families were assigned a small house or an apartment, but many are still living with friends or in motels. On top of that what was left for lodging is now occupied by the many rebuilding crews during the week, so we had a chance to find a room only during the week end. So i took on the task to look around for a recreational vehicle. After some research, on a gray humid day I drove up to Veneta Camper and enter the large showroom. We are first timers at this and I was amazed and a little intimidated by the size of the many vehicles. I looked around for a person, and I was greeted by the smile of a little blond girl no older than three who was coloring in the office. No mom in sight.... I waited and she kept smiling, finally a young lady came out of a wearhouse in the back and greeted me with a smile just like the one of the little girl.

M. asked me what I needed and I told her I was looking to rent an RV with a large storage area. She lead the way toward one and we sat on the chairs around the small table. She inquired on my trip and i told her i was going to Abruzzo for A thousand colours. She lit up and she wanted to know all about it, asking me questions on quilting and we talked like old friends for about an hour.

Finally we went to the office to reserve dates for our trip. When I asked how much the rental would cost us, she looked straight in my eyes and gave me a figure which I understood to be per day.....she replied: " No, that is for the whole time of rental, you are going to Abruzzo for humanitarian reasons and the least I can do is to help you with what I have." I could not hold back tears and all I could say was: " Thank you! " We will be packing tomorrow for our trip, we have a precious and colorful cargo to load and we can truly say that not all angels have wings...some of them have wheels !!!

Quando abbiamo cercato un posto dove stare vicino all'Aquila per effettuare la consegna dei quilts, ci siamo resi conto che era quasi impossibile trovarlo. Anche i nostri contatti ad Onna, nonostante si siano dati un gran da fare per trovarci qualcosa, con rammarico hanno riportato che il posto c'era, ma solo durante il week end, quando gli operai impegnati nella ricostruzione e provenienti da tutta italia, tornano a casa. Cosi' ci siamo risolti a noleggiare un camper e la ricerca e' toccata a me. Un uggioso pomeriggio circa venti giorni fa, mi sono messa in macchina e ho guidato fino alla Veneta Camper, appena fuori Treviso. Entro nella grande esposizione e, sinceramente rimango meravigliata e un po' intimidita dai grossi veicoli fermi all' interno. A dir la verita' mi e' sempre piaciuta l' idea di poter fare una vacanza in camper, hai il tuo letto, il tuo cuscino, le tue cose, giochi a " casetta " e ti sposti dove vuoi, l' idea di girare l'Europa mi piacerebbe molto..... Guardo nell'ufficio per vedere se c'e' una pesona che puo' aiutarmi e trovo una bella bambina bionda di circa tre anni che alza la testa, mi fa un sorriso e....continua a colorare, niente mamma in vista.....

Poco dopo dal deposito sul retro esce una giovane donna e, con un sorriso esattamente come quello della bimba, mi saluta e mi chiede in cosa puo' aiutarmi. Le dico che ho bisogno di un camper con un vano garage capiente e dopo avermi portato vicino a quello scelto, ci sediamo e iniziamo a parlare, una parola tira l'altra e alla sua domanda sulla nostra destinazione, Mille Colori e' uscito e abbiamo parlato del progetto, del patchwork, della vita, dei bambini....come se fossimo amiche da tempo. Arriva il momento di spostarsi in ufficio per definire le date e il resto e, dopo averle fissate, le chiedo quanto ci verra' a costare. M. mi guarda dritta negli occhi e mi dice una cifra, al che io chiedo se e' la tariffa giornaliera. M. risponde: " No, e' per tutto il tempo che vi serve. Voi andate in Abruzzo per ragioni umanitarie e non in vacanza, il meno che io possa fare e' darvi cio' che io ho a disposizione. " Inutile dire che mi sono commossa....

Domani inizieremo a riempire il camper con il prezioso e colorato carico ed io e Vincent possiamo senza dubbio dire affermare che non tutti gli angeli hanno le ali, alcuni sono biondi, hanno un bellissimo sorriso e... anche le ruote!!!

happines is.....felicita' e'.........

......a house full of quilts!!!

Today we worked like mad to divide all the quilts by school, age , boys and girls, we placed them in large plastic bags with a note stating the " where and who " and counted, counted, counted.....you all know how much i like numbers..... It was a delight to see and touch them again, I imagined all of you going with us... Well they are all in the living room waiting to be loaded on the RV on saturday morning. All the details have been finalized and when Vincent and I walked in Gioia's room, we shivered....it was cold without all the quilts!!! We better get ready because a friend that lives in Abruzzo told me tonight that the temperature during the night in Aquila ( the capital of Abruzzo ) goes down to minus 10 Celsius wich is 14 Farhenaith!!! I confess that another thing I do not like is cold weather!!! We are experiencing a mild winter here in the north were we live so i better get out my feather coat, hat, gloves and scarf and get ready.

.....una casa piena di quilts!!!

Oggi abbiamo lavorato come dei matti per dividere tutti i quilts per scuola, eta', maschietti e femminucce, li abbiamo infilati in grandi buste di plastica trasparente, abbiamo aggiunto una nota con dove, chi e quanti e abbiamo contato, contato, contato e ricontato.....ho la testa che frigge, sapete quanto io ami i numeri.... E' stata una gioia toccarli tutti di nuovo e immaginarvi tutte con noi... Ora sono tutti in salotto pronti per essere caricati sul camper sabato mattina. Tutti i dettagli sono stati discussi e approvati e quando Vincent ed io siamo entrati in camera di Gioia dove erano conservati i quilts, un brivido di freddo ci ha colti...diventa tutto freddo senza quilts!!!

E' meglio che ci prepariamo pero', una amica che vive in Abruzzo stasera mi ha detto che all"Aquila di notte la temperatura scende a meno 10 e confesso che oltre a non amare i numeri, non amo il freddo!!! Domani preparero' il piumino, il cappello e la sciarpa di lana e i guanti....meno 10... e' meglio che non ci pensi!

Preparativi ~ Getting ready

Manca veramente poco tempo e stiamo lavorando alacremente per rendere Mille Colori pronto per il suo culmine: la consegna dei quilts ai bimbi abruzzesi. Le incognite erano molte, ma stanno svanendo una ad una ogni giorno che passa, di questo Vincent ed io siamo veramente riconoscenti! I preparativi sono laboriosi perche' i quilts come sapete sono moltissimi, stiamo fotografandoli tutti per preservare la " storicita' " dell'evento e contiamo di condividere tutto con voi, che avete lavorato, donato e che ci state pensando e seguendo con affetto. Una cara amica, Yalet ci sta aiutando molto, e' stata qui due giorni per le foto ( che contiamo di terminare oggi! ) e sara' qui giovedi per effettuare la selezione per eta' e sesso dei bambini. Imbusteremo il tutto in grossi sacchi pronti per essere caricati sul camper. In loco metteremo i quilts in borse individuali contrassegnate con codici di consegna maschi e femmine, grandi e piccoli , un bel fiocco natalizio rosso e..........non vedo l'ora, mi commuovo ora che non ho ancora visto i piccini......

I quilts verranno consegnati in occasione dei programmi natalizi delle scuole materne e noi non potevamo sperare in meglio, saranno presenti mamme, papa', nonni, zii e amici. Sara' un Natale diverso e mi auguro speciale per l'Abruzzo, molti di noi si augurano di renderlo tale con la solidarieta' e l'amore di chi ha desiderato essere vicino alla gente che ha perso molto o tutto.

Time is going by and we are quickly approaching our awaited trip to Abruzzo. We are working very hard to prepare all the details in order to make this a truly " historical " event for the children who will receive their beautiful quilt. Our dear friend Yalet helped us twice in photographing all the quilts ( a biiiig job since they are truly many!!! ) and she will be here on thursday to pack large bags ready for loading in the RV we rented and already sorted out by ages and for boys and girls. On location we will place the quilts in individual bags that were kindly donated, we will decorate them with a nice red Christmas bow and......they will be ready to finally be placed in eager little hands!!!! We will give away the quilts during the Christmas program that each school usually holds before the holidays. Moms and dads, grandparents, aunts and uncles and friends will be there, we could not ask for a better occasion! I get emotional every time i think of that moment, i can't wait to see those faces and place your effort of love in those little hands......

Ricordate questa ? Era il principio della "Pila" dei vostri quilts per i l progetto "Mille colori per i bimbi d' Abruzzo", un umile, ma dignitoso inizio. Al tempo non avevo la piu' pallida idea di quello che sarebbe arrivato nei mesi seguenti. E' stata un'estate piena di gioia e ....pacchi da tutto il mondo! Non pensavo mai che avrei ricevuto cosi' tanti bellissimi quilts e incontrato nuove amiche...VOI TUTTE!

Remember this? It is the beginning of the "Pile" of your quilts for the project "A Thousand colours for the children of Abruzzo", a humble but precious beginning. The following months where filled with joy and...packages from all over the world. Never in my wildest imagination, i thought i would receive soooooo many beautiful quilts and made many new friends....YOU ALL!

Bene, ora dovete fare una moltiplicazione e sapete tutte come odio la matematica....La pila di 10 si e' moltiplicata per 3o il che fa 300!!! Come si fa ad esprimere l'emozione di avere in casa 300 quilts da tutto il mondo...posso vedere le vostre mani che si muovono con rotelle per tagliare le coloratissime stoffe, le ore impiegate a lavorare, gli uffici postali per cui e' passato il vostro prezioso carico. Certamente sentiro' un vuoto quando tutti quilts viaggeranno verso l'Abruzzo.....ma finalmente la mia e vostra gioia sara' completa. Finalmente arriveranno nelle manine dei loro proprietari che non hanno la piu' pallida idea del dono che riceveranno.

Well, now you have to do some math and you all know how i hate it.....You have to multiply 10 by 30...yes you read correctly.... and that makes 300!!! I can only begin to tell you how thrilling it is to have your 300 beautiful quilts in my home....during the summer i could imagine all of you cutting colorful patches, sewing them together in the pleasing pattern you chose, taking your precious "cargo" to the post office and praying and hoping it would reach its destination safely. I will certainly feel lost when all the quilts will leave to travel to Abruzzo, but my joy your joy will be complete. Finally they will be placed in the little hands of the children and will enter their new homes.

Non c'e' niente che puo' sostituire lo sguardo sorpreso e felice di un bimbo che riceve un dono inaspettato, e il vostro dono sara' recapitato per Natale! Tutti i dettagli logistici sono stati lunghi , laboriosi e a volte mi sono scoraggiata, ma una Mano da Alto ha preparato la strada. Il 13 dicembre partiremo in camper con il prezioso carico e consegneremo i quilts in vari asili tra quali quelli di Onna e Paganica.

Nothing compares to the look of wonder and surprise in a child's eyes when he receives a unespected gift, and your gift will be deliver at Chrismas time! All the logistics were long and laborious and I confess at times I got discouraged, but a Higher Hand prepared the way. We will travel in a quite full RV the 13th of december and will deliver the quilts in various schools. Onna and Paganica are two of the towns we will reach and they are located in the area that was greatly ruined by the quake.

Questo Natale, a parte quello del 1980 quando e' nata mia figlia Gioia ( Cookie ti voglio un mondo di bene e vorrei che tu fossi qui con me a condividere questa gioia e a darmi una mano come facevi una volta! ) sara' il Natale piu' memorabile della mia vita. Grazie a tutte per averlo reso tale, vi terro' informate sulle belle cose che arriveranno.

This will be certainly a memorable and unforgettable Christmas, the most beautiful one being in 1980 when my daughter Gioia was born....Cookie i wish you were here with me to share my joy and to help me as you used to do! Thank you all for making it so, i will keep you posted on the beautiful things that are to come in the days ahead.

A story.....Una storia....

When i sent out " A Thousand Colors " i received many enthusiastic answers, one of them came from Switzerland from C. and her daughter S. who is fifteen years old. C. told me she already belonged to a guild that sewed very small quilts for premies and told me what a comfort is for mothers to bring home their little ones in a colorful and warm blanket made with care and love.

Quando ho mandato Mille Colori in giro per il mondo, ho ricevuto molte risposte entusiaste. Una di queste e' arrivata dalla Svizzera da C. e sua figlia quindicenne S.

C. fa parte di una associazione che cuce quiltini per neonati prematuri e mi ha raccontato che conforto e' per la mamma sapere che qualcuno ha cucito con amore una calda copertina per il suo bimbo.

C. wrote me that she and her daughter wanted to contribute to the project by sewing at least 8 quilts! To me it was so much, but i have learn in life not to question generosity ( among other things ) and i thanked her. This was back in april.

C. mi scrisse che lei e sua figlia desideravano contribuire al progetto con 8 quilts! Mi sembrava moltissimo, al momento le adesioni erano alla fase iniziale quindi aggiungerne otto mi sembrava un sogno, cosi' le scrissi per ringraziarla della sua generosita'. Questo era in aprile.

In late may C. wrote me telling that she and S. had sewn 18 quilts! Wrote again thanking her for her generosity and hard work on the project.

I asked for pictures, it is a beautiful thing that a mother and daughter work on a common project, at times i did that with my daughter Gioia and it was great time spent together ( i miss those times Cookie! ). So pictures came.

A maggio inoltrato C. scrive dicendo che lei e S. avevano terminato 18 quilts! Risposi ringraziandole per la loro continua generosita' e impegno nel progetto.

Chiesi delle foto. E' una cosa bellissima quando mamma e figlia lavorano ad un progetto comune, a volte l'ho fatto con mia figlia Gioia ed e' il tempo meglio speso ( mi mancano quei momenti Cookie! ). Cosi' arrivarono le foto.

Arriva giugno e C. mi scrive che ha terminato 30 quilts e che si spostera' a trovare i suoi genitori in Ticino per poter spedire i pacchi dall'Italia!

June arrives and C. writes that she will travel in Ticino ( very close to the border of Italy ) to visit her parents and mail the large package containing 30 quilts!

La storia non finisce qui...... The story does not end here....

Thirty quilts arrived last week in two very large packages, it took the official Unpacker some time to open them... La settimana scorsa sono arrivati i 30 quilts in due pacchi enormi, ci e' voluto un po' di tempo allo Spacchettatore ufficiale per aprirli...

We curiously begin looking at the quilts by displaying them on our living room carpet and lo and behold i turn one of them on the back....than another one, then another one....i went on like that 30 times.....the backings were made with another quilt!!!!

Iniziamo ad aprire i quilts ansiosi di vederli, come del resto facciamo io e Vincent con tutti i pacchi che arrivano.....ne giro uno....poi un altro....poi un altro....questo per 30 volte.....tutti i retro dei quilts erano altri quilts!!!

Needless to say we were amazed at the work and when i called C. and again thanked her for her work and asked her why she decided to put another quilt instead of the usual plain backing ( by the way, many of you pieced their backing making the quilt more interesting!!!! ) she answered sweetly with her musical french accent: " Because it was more fun to do it like that!"

Mio marito ed io siamo rimasti di sasso al lavoro incredibile che contenevano i quilts e quando ho telefonato a C. per ringraziarla per l'ennesima vola e chiederle perche' ha messo un altro quilt sul retro lei, con il suo accento francese cosi' musicale , mi ha risposto: " Perche' e' piu' divertente cosi! "

Ho imparato molto tramite il lavoro di C. e S. .....il tempo donato per gli altri ritorna prima o poi, un giorno C. e S. forse saranno le beneficiarie del lavoro di altri che nemmeno conoscono proprio come io lo sono stata del loro lavoro che passero' ai bimbi abruzzesi. Sono certa che lavorare insieme le ha avvicinate l'una all'altra e il loro rapporto mamma figlia e' diventato piu' forte. Ho anche imparato che si puo' essere molto piu' '' libere'' nella realizzazione di un quilt e divertirsi a mescolare tessuti diversi fra loro anche in genere ed usare il loro colore. Il modo in cui sono compost i loro quilts, a fascioni, intercalati da pannelli a tema e assemblati liberamente ed istintivamente hanno portato aria fresca nella mia stanza lavoro, la mia Officina Patch.

I learned a lot through C. and S. ' s work.....time given to others does come back to you, i' m sure one day C. and S. will be the recipients of love from someone they do not even know, just like i have been with their work and i will pass it on to the kids in Abruzzo. I'm sure also that they grew closer by working together with a common goal and that will result in a deeper relationship mother and daughter. I also learned that you can make a quilt in a freer way by putting very different fabrics together and only looking at their color, the simple yet very pleasing compositions are a breath of fresh air to the way i approach quilting.....i could go on....

Grazie a tutte per il vostro lavoro per i bimbi d' Abruzzo....Una Persona a me molto cara ha detto due millenni fa : " Vi e' piu' gioia nel dare che nel ricevere.'' Gesu'

Thank you all for your work for the children of Abruzzo....A Person very dear to my heart two thousand years said: " There is more joy to give than to receive." Jesus
